About The Beads

When Mzuribeads founder, Kirstie MacLean, first introduced her product in the UK, she was told that there was not a market for beads which could not be mass produced. Kirstie took this as a challenge, and the search began for customers seeking handmade, unique, one-of-a-kind beads.  Before long, Mzuribeads became one of the hottest fashion products for socially conscious hobbyists and professional designers in the UK.
 
Mzuribeads are handmade by a cooperative of women in Uganda. Originally started with just four women who were trained by a now defunct organization, Mzuribeads now involves more than 20 women, including a larger network catering to bulk sized orders. The women are paid a set price for their beads, based on the Fair Trade advised standards of payment.  Regular communications ensure all beaders are happy with the price they receive. The business is run by volunteers who ensure that all materials and other business expenses are paid in advance, and all final product is paid for when completed.
